Originating first in construction and heavy engineering, project managers are now employed in every industry including education and charities.

Around 2.13m people work as project managers and 40 per cent of companies are looking to hire more project management professionals.

So if you’re ready to project yourself into an exciting new career, here’s how with Sun Jobs.

What exactly is a project manager?

Put simply, Project Managers look after the day-to-day management of projects.

Industry experts follow a plan of six key areas including scope, schedulefinance, risk, quality and resources.

Project Managers do everything from planning what work needs to be done, when and who’s going to do it, to making sure the work is done to the right standard.

Finally, they will ensure the project delivers its aims on time and within budget.

What is the salary for a Project Manager?

It’s a well-paid role with an average UK salary of £52,950.

Some freelance roles can pay up to £1,000 per day, entry level jobs start at around £30,000.

What skills do project managers need?

As a highly-responsible job, the list of skills you will need is comprehensive.

Strong leadership skills are vital and you must be able to build and motivate a team.

Time management, planning and organisational skills are essential, along with the ability to manage risk and budgets.

As projects rarely go completely to plan, you must also be adaptable and unflappable under pressure.

How do I become a project manager?

There are an increasing number of routes into the role including apprenticeships and associated business degrees.

To take your first steps and show you are serious, consider taking the Project Fundamentals Qualification from the Association of Project Management.

Studying will help you decide if the career is right for you. Once you pass, it will open up entry-level jobs.
