KITTING out your home with new furniture often leaves the problem of what to do with the old gear.

Here is how you can get rid of it without adding big costs to what you have already spent on the replacements.

SELL IT: If your unwanted item has even a little life left, selling it gives you a bit of extra cash and nicely solves the problem of removal.

Flattering photos make all the difference on re-sell sites including Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree and eBay.

For example, if your sofa has removable covers, spin through the wash to get rid of grubby marks and strategically place the cushions to make it look as good as possible.

Giving a low price or listing for free should help speed up removal.

Offering delivery can also make it more attractive. Call in a favour from a friend with a van, if possible.

COLLECT AND GO: Look for local charities and recycling projects that will take away a sofa and other items if they are still fit to be used.

For example, the British Heart Foundation has a nationwide free collection service.

For a sofa, it needs to have a fire safety label and will be rejected if it is not in resaleable condition.

Some furniture firms will remove old sofas when delivering a new one, but the service is usually expensive, with many bigger firms charging almost £100.

Your council should have a waste removal service that is probably cheaper, but waiting lists can be weeks long.

Book well ahead if you want a bulky item gone by Christmas, for example.

Depending on where you live, the council is likely to charge you anywhere between £30 and £80 to take a two-seater sofa.

If you are looking for a faster option, it is worth looking at quotes through an online platform such as lovejunk.com.

These sites connect people looking for items removed with second-hand firms and waste collectors.

Quotes can be competitive compared with prices from furniture firms but are changeable and based on your location.
