With starting pay a huge 64 per cent above the UK average, software development – also known as software engineering – is a fast-growing area offering endless opportunities to work across every sector.

While you will have to study before gaining a job, the rewards are well worth it.

Here’s the easy PC guide to getting you started, from Sun Jobs.

What does a software developer do?

Think about any organisation and they will use some form of a computer program.

The software engineer’s job is to design and write the code to make these programs work.

This can include anything from apps and video games to payment systems and operating systems.

Software engineers can be hired to improve existing software or to design an entirely new programme based on a client’s needs.

You will likely work on a team with other software developers, engineers, or computer programmers.

What qualifications will I need as a software developer?

Most software developers take a degree in a related subject such as computer science, maths, computer science, IT or software engineering for business, then move into a graduate role.

However, demand for developers is so high that there are growing numbers of college courses and apprenticeships which will get you into an entry-level role.

You can test out your aptitude for the job with a free course at the Institute of Coding. Seeinstituteofcoding.org.

How much do software developers earn?

A lot! Average pay ranges from £24,000 for entry-level apprentices to well over £70,000 for experienced programmers.

The current average salary in 2024  is £57,548.

What are the career prospects for a software developer?

There are several ways to progress your career as a software developer.

You can become a senior developer or team leader on development projects.

You could also set up your own software engineering business or move into related areas, such as systems design, IT architecture and business systems analysis.

As software is used across every industry, you can also specialise in a sector you are passionate about and become an expert in that field.
