According to official statistics, tech industry workers account for 6.3 per cent of the total UK workforce, with nearly 15,000 new tech jobs projected to be created this year alone.

As well as being one of the most exciting sectors to work in, it’s also one of the best paid, with an average salary of £62,500.

It’s not just for grads: Yes, computer science grads can earn buckets of cash, but tech and coding roles are an inclusive industry. The current skills gap and sheer number of jobs to be filled means the industry is open to school leavers career switchers job returners too.

Teach yourself: Coding is the key skill you’ll need but you don’t have to have a degree. There are a plethora of self-teach platforms which can launch you into the industry. Try codingame.com to get started.

Get in on an apprenticeship: Most tech firms now offer entry-level and degree apprenticeships, taking you right up to Level 7 qualifications. And the apprenticeships are open to all ages, not just school leavers. Search at apprenticeships.gov.uk/apprentices/browse-by-interests/digital.

Network: By its very nature, tech is the world’s best industry to network with online. Target the firms you’re keen to work with by connecting on LinkedIn and social media and sign up for industry groups and seminars. 

Not an IT whizz? There are dozens of support roles from HR to sales and marketing which offer a seat at the tech table.
