HOUSEHOLDS could get up to £6,000 free to make improvements to their home under a new government scheme.
The boiler upgrade scheme helps households replace their old gas heating with newer low carbon heating systems.
In order to be eligible for the grant, you must live in England or Wales and own your property. Private landlords and second homeowners are also eligible for this scheme.
The property must have an installation capacity up to 45kWth and a current energy performance certificate (EPC) without any recommendations relating to loft or cavity wall insulation to be eligible for the scheme.
Households are entitled to receive one of these grants
New builds, social housing and properties that already are receiving funding from this scheme are not entitled to this grant.
How do I apply?
Don’t worry about applying because an installer will apply on your behalf.
Find an MCS certified installer who can help you with the work. They’ll then be able to advise you as to whether you may be eligible for the grant.
You’ll then discuss a quote for the new installation and then the installer will apply for the grant.

You’ll be emailed by Ofgem who’ll ask to confirm about the installation and that the installer is working on your behalf.
The grant comes after a bid to ban gas boilers in order to reduce carbon emissions and create greener homes.
If you’re wondering how an air source pump, biomass boiler or ground source heat pump works then we’re here to explain.
An air source heat pump and ground source heat pump is a greener heating system that uses electricity to transfer heat from outside your home to heat the space and give you hot water.
Simply, it reduces the carbon footprint, reuses electricity and recycles it to heat up your home.
Biomass boilers are heating systems fuelled by wood. You burn wood pellets, chips or logs to provide heat in a room, power your central heating and hot water cylinders.
A stove burns logs and pellets to heat up one room. It can also have a back boiler fitted to heat up your water. A boiler will burn logs, pellets and chips whilst connected to your properties central heating and hot water systems.
These systems are better suited to larger buildings which maybe harder to insulate and aren’t suitable for the heat pump system.
The grant will go towards the cost of the new system and it’s installation. Don’t worry about paying anything back, the money is free cash, you’ll never need to pay anything back.
However, if the new installation costs more than the prices listed, you will need to cover the extra cost.
However, this extra cost would be similar to that of paying for a traditional gas boiler to be installed, which usually costs around £500 to £1,500.
The scheme is available in England and Wales until 2025.
