How many of your neighbours have points on their licence?

A new study might be able to give you an indication by naming the 10 postcode areas in England, Scotland and Wales with the highest proportion of motorists with at least three points on their driving records currently.

It reveals that Halifax, West Yorkshire, has the most residents with marks on their licence, with more than one in ten motorists living there having three or more points.

Scroll to the bottom to see where your postcode ranks as we reveal the proportion of drivers with points in every major postcode.

The data has been obtained from the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency by car leasing comparison site, LeaseLoco – who exclusively shared the findings with This is Money.

Official records show that a total of 2,781,954 drivers across England, Scotland and Wales currently have at least three points on their driving licences for motoring offences, according to figures published in September.

The Halifax postcode (HF) has the highest proportion, with 10,947 drivers recorded as having three or more points currently, out of 102,350 licenced motorists who live there.

Near-by Bradford (10.6 per cent) and Leeds (10.2 per cent) have the next highest number of car drivers with at least three penalty points on their licence as a percentage of total motorists.

However, it is Birmingham that has the most drivers penalised for motoring offences in any single postcode area.

A whopping 78,004 (6.9 per cent) motorists in the ‘B’ postcode have at least three points on their licences out of 1,135,341 who live there.

LeaseLoco also flags that more than 20,000 of Birmingham’s drivers with marks on the licence are in fact multiple offenders with at least six points currently.

Britons could face fines up to £18m for not parking in the lines

Britons could be liable for fines of up to £18m from Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) for failing to fit inside designated parking bays, research by Citroen UK shows.

A total of 137k fines were issued to motorists for failing to park fully within the lines of parking bays since 2019, according to Freedom of Information requests issued to the local Authorities running the ten largest British cities, including all 32 London Boroughs.

The research found that Edinburgh Council handed out the most PCNs to drivers who parked outside a marked bay, with over 19,800 PCNs issued since 2019. Tower Hamlets Council in London only handed out 52 over the same period for the same offence.

Glasgow Council was in second place, handing out 17,800 PCNs since 2019, while Havering Council in London handed out over 15,700.

According to the AA, motorists who receive a PCN for a parking offence are liable for fines up to £130, meaning that the 137k fines received could have cost drivers up to £17.9m.

A total of over £9m could have been taken from motorists parking in London alone.

Courts endorse driving licences with penalty points if a driver is convicted of a motoring offence.

The most common reason is breaking the speed limit on a public road.

A motorist can be disqualified from driving if they build up 12 or more points within a period of three years – or by accumulating six or more points within the first two years of passing their test.

Across England, Scotland and Wales, some 10,415 drivers have at least 12 points on their driving licences today, the DVLA figures show.

Over 94,000 drivers (94,088) currently have nine penalty points on their licences, meaning they are just one more motoring offence away from receiving an automatic ban.

John Wilmot, chief executive of LeaseLoco said: ‘Almost three million motorists in England, Scotland and Wales have at least three penalty points on their driving licences, with a large number of these fines incurred for speeding.

‘Motorists need to remember that endorsements stay on your licence for between four and eleven years, depending on the offence committed.

‘Having points on your licence will almost certainly lead to a higher insurance premium as insurers consider the risk factors associated with a given customer when calculating the premiums.

‘And at a time when millions of people are already struggling with the cost of living, higher car insurance premiums will sting more than ever.

‘With car insurance premiums already significantly higher than 12 months ago, and not likely to fall any time soon, committing a motoring offence isn’t just a danger to other road users, it is likely to significantly hurt you in the pocket too.’
