And this makes them too big to fit into the standard toaster, according to a Which? study.

It found the average slot is 14.5cm wide by 12.8cm high, and allow for varying bread thickness.

But some models are so small they can only handle a 1.2cm thick slice.

Sourdough slices can be up to 22cm wide.

They are often cut in half to toast but then toast unevenly because of the extra moisture content compared to a standard sliced loaf.

A spokesman for Which? said: “Toast is a staple of the great British breakfast, so why are so many toasters the wrong size and shape to squeeze our favourite slices of bread in?”

Specialist toa-sters can handle wider slices and even have settings for crumpets and bagels — but can cost more than £100.
