EVER accidentally walked into someone while texting and walking?

Google is bringing out a feature to help Android users who have this problem and it’s aptly named ‘Heads Up’.

The feature is currently being tested on the beta version of the Google Digital Wellbeing app.

You can also use this app to keep track of your smartphone use and make sure you’re not using it too much.

The Heads Up feature will work by sending you a notification if it can sense you walking with your smartphone unlocked.

It will warn users to be aware of their surroundings.

The warning may come in the form of a pinging noise if your phone isn’t on silent.

It’s also expected to pick up whether you’re walking, jogging or running.

The Google support page explains: “The app uses sensors in your phone that detect movement to understand whether or not you’re walking, while the location is used to understand whether you’re walking indoors or outdoors.”

You don’t have to share location data to use the feature.

If you do grant location permissions, the feature can take into account whether you’re indoors or not.

Google added: “While we have tested this feature to be as accurate as possible, do not rely solely on this feature to keep safe.

“Please always use your best judgement, and use this feature as a gentle reminder when you do find yourself distracted while walking.”

It’s not yet clear when Heads Up could roll out to all Android users.

To use Heads Up right now you can  join the beta program in the Digital Wellbeing app.
