FAMILIES face a “cost of grilling crisis” as the price of a barbecue rockets by over £15.

Sixteen sizzler staples will now cost Brits £89.12 up from £74 last year – a 20 per cent extra whack.

Iceberg lettuce has shot up by a whopping 41 per cent to sting shoppers an extra 23p.

Cheddar cheese has soared by a gut-busting £2.66 and a pack of four beef burgers by 87p.

Food inflation remains stubbornly high at 19.1 per cent despite headline inflation dropping this month.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Chancellor Jeremy Hunt have been meeting producers to thrash out a solution including the possibility of voluntary price caps.

Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper said: “Families this summer are facing a cost of grilling crisis, as the price of the Great British barbecue goes through the roof.

“From burgers and sausages to bread rolls and cheddar, barbecue essentials are all seeing eye-watering price hikes.

“The government needs to get a grip on soaring inflation and food prices. So far it’s been all talk and no action.”
