The holidays are a time for joy, family, presents, and… a lot of fun colors.

What does your tinsel do to your mood?

What does your tinsel do to your mood?

From the rich red of Santa’s suit to the tranquil green of a Christmas tree, holiday hues are not just festive decorations.

They also also powerful tools that can subconsciously influence our moods and emotions.

And what better way to enhance our moods than with shimmering and shiny tinsel around our homes?

However, depending on the vibe you’re going for, some tinsel colors may work better than others for your residence.

“Color psychology is a fascinating area, especially when applied to festive decorations,” Daniel Matchar, a therapist at Practical Pie, told The U.S. Sun.

Below we have shared what emotions each color is associated with to help you decide which tinsel to go for.

WHAT EACH COLOR MEANS

Red tinsel, Matchar explained, is often associated with excitement and energy.

“Red can evoke warmth and comfort reminiscent of traditional holiday joy,” he said.

Green on the other hand can create a calming environment as it represents harmony and balance.

In turn, this can “reduce stress during the often hectic holiday season,” Matchar said.

If you opt for a lot of gold tinsel, you can promote optimism and a sense of celebration throughout your home.

“Gold symbolizes optimism and positivity, potentially enhancing the overall festive spirit,” Matchar noted.

Meanwhile, silver reflects a modern and sleek look that can bring a sense of freshness to traditional holiday decor.

The ever-changing reflections can also encourage a sense of movement and excitement during the holiday season.

“While there’s no one-size-fits-all color to guarantee happiness, choosing a tinsel that resonates with you can enhance your emotional connection to the holiday season, making it all the more special,” Matchar said.

WHAT TO AVOID

While Matchar noted that the impact of color is subjective and can vary based on individual preferences and experiences, there are some general considerations to keep in mind.

For starters, you may want to avoid using colors that might be too intense or overwhelming.

“For instance, very bright or neon shades can be stimulating to the point of being distracting or unsettling,” he said.

He added to be mindful of color combinations that might clash, “as this can create visual discord and subconsciously affect mood.”

And of course, dark or dull colors are typically discouraged around the holiday season.

“While they can be elegant, darker or duller colors like deep browns or grays might not evoke the festive spirit as effectively as brighter, more traditional holiday colors,” Matchar said.

“These shades can sometimes create a more subdued or somber atmosphere.”

Ultimately, Matchar said, it’s all about the individual creating a space that feels inviting, festive, and reflective of their tastes and preferences.
