PUTTING pay to those flabby financial habits in the New Year will help you save more and waste less.
So here’s how to kick off 2023 with a keen eye on the money . . .
KEEP TRACK: You can’t manage what you don’t measure. From ignoring bank accounts to not working out the spending, we are all guilty of these things at some point.
Start by looking back at your December accounts to see exactly where your money is going.
Once you know, plan essential outgoings for January and look at the other spending you could trim, pause or stop.
PLAN MEALS: The big shop is one of the largest outgoings, especially for families.
If you haven’t made a meal plan already, start now and then downgrade all the big-brand items to supermarket-own items.
Tesco has an easy digital meal planner at realfood.tesco.com.
Many of us have already tried that but go one further by swapping fresh for canned and frozen.
Download the Shopmium.com app to get exclusive vouchers for individual products.

AUTO DRIVE: Most banks have a “round-ups” feature for saving cash, or a reward account that offers money back just for logging into online banking or switching direct debits.
The NatWest Rewards account has a £2 fee per month, but get £4 cashback with two direct debits and logging into online banking once a month.
Automate your cashback by adding your bank cards to Airtime Rewards to make extra money while spending both online and in-store.
ADD THE EXTRAS: Use topcashback.co.uk and quidco.com at the start of every online shop to get a little back at most major retailers.
Sign up to brand newsletters for new customer discounts before big purchases.
Log in to loyalty card accounts and check for extra offers, partner discounts and check the balance for all points so you can spend them or even swap them for better-value store vouchers.
- All prices on page correct at time of going to press. Deals and offers subject to availability.
