GOOGLE has unveiled two new smartphones – and one can even take temperatures.
The pair of iPhone rivals are called Google Pixel 8 and Google Pixel 8 Pro.
They were announced at today’s Made by Google event in New York City.
The Pixel 8 is available in Hazel, Rose, and Obsidian, and starts at $699.
It features a 5.2-inch screen with 1,080 x 2,040 pixels, which is 428 pixels-per-inch.
The display can deliver a 60-120Hz refresh rate, with a peak brightness of 2,000 nits.
Meanwhile the Pixel 8 Pro starts at $999 and comes in Bay, Porcelain, and Obsidian colour options.
It boasts a larger 6.7-inch Super Actua display.
And the panel is a lot more detail-dense offering 489 pixels-per-inch, with a resolution of 1,344 x 2,992 pixels.
Google has branded it as a Smooth Display, offering refresh rates from 1Hz right up to 120Hz, and a peak brightness of 2,400 nits.

And it’s protected with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
Like the regular Pixel 8, you’ll get a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and support for HDR video.
Due to the increased size, the Pixel 8 Pro comes in heavier at 213 grams (versus the 187-gram Pixel 8).
That’s just slightly lighter than the 221-gram iPhone 15 Pro Max, which had its own reduction thanks to a new titanium frame.
Both screens are “always-on”, so you can see key information at any time.
The pair of the devices are both said to offer “beyond 24-hour battery life”.
And this can be extended to 72 hours if you switch on Extreme Battery Saver mode.
Google’s pair of devices charge using USB-C (so you can share cables with owners of the new iPhone 15 too).
The regular Pixel 8 has 8GB of RAM while the Pro model comes with 12GB as standard.
Both devices come in 128GB and 256GB storage variants.
But the Pro model is also available in 512GB and 1TB options too.
Google has fitted the two devices with its custom-built Tensor G3 chip.
Snap it up!
The two devices both come fitted with the same 50-megapixel wide camera on their backs.
For the Pixel 8, this is paired with a 12-megapixel ultra wide camera.
But on the Pro, you get two additional cameras instead.
There’s the 48-megapixel ultra wide camera, as well as a 48-megapixel telephoto shooter than offers an iPhone 15 Pro Max-style 5x optical zoom.
You’ll also get the same 10.5-megapixel selfie camera on the front with a 95-degree ultra wide field of view.
One of the big differences between the Pixel 8 and the Pro is the temperature sensor on the latter.
This allows you to point your phone’s sensor at an object and measure how hot (or cold) it is.
And Google said that is submitting an application to the FDA so that an app can be used to take your own temperature.
There’s a new-and-improved version of Face Unlock that can now verify app sign-ins.
AI like it
Google has bundled in some clever AI tools too.
For a start, you’ll still be able to enjoy the Google Assistant.
But Google said that now you can have more natural conversations – and promised the Assistant would understand speech even with pauses, as well as “ums” and “ahs”.
You can also ask Assistant to summarise webpages and read them out loud too.
There’s an option to write messages “twice as quickly” using your voice.
And the At A Glance feature surfaces important info on your screen , including updates to your travel or tickets to events you’re attending.
Google Assistant also promises to detect and filter out more spam calls.

And if you’re too busy to pick up, the Assistant should be able to tell you who is calling – and why.
Finally, an upgraded version of Magic Editor lets you easily replace distracting parts of a photo, reframe yourself in an image, and even “re-cast” the lighting.
