GOOGLE has launched a brand new Nest Cam – a home security camera that you can watch from anywhere.

The new version is a “battery” edition, with a rechargeable cell on board.
You can install the camera indoors or outdoors.
And there’s a magnet base, so you can even stick it on metal surfaces without having to drill. Drilling options are available, of course.
It works off charge without a cable, or you can leave it plugged in.
Once it’s set up (which takes mere minutes), it’ll record and stream footage directly to the Google Home app on your phone.
The level of watchability depends on how much you pay.
There are three pricing tiers.
The first is free, and let’s you watch live footage – and nothing else.
Pay a fiver a month and you’ll be able to check out history from motion events too.
But a tenner a month will bag you a rolling 10-day history of 24/7 footage that you can watch. For the truly paranoid.
I’m signed up to the latter, because it’s exceptional peace of mind – but the £5 plan is probably enough for most.
The event-based system is very accurate – it knows when there are humans pottering around.
In fact, there are three types of alerts: person, vehicle and animal.
It records in 1080p video quality, has a very effective night vision mode (using infrared, in black and white), and HDR (for correct exposure on sunny days).
You can even talk through the device using your phone – to spook out burglars, “haunt” your family, or just chat to your dog.
And if it’s installed outside, you could tell the postie to leave a package by the door.
If you’ve got it indoors, you might be concerned about privacy.
Thankfully, you can turn it off and on using the app – and a green light will signify when the camera is active.
This light will flash if you’re watching live, so everyone knows when someone is looking through the camera.
Google’s round camera pod is also very attractive. Forget traditional CCTV cameras – this is a cute ornament you’ll love having at home.
The cost of this joyous security gadget is £179.99, which isn’t cheap. Or £7.50 a month for 24 months if you prefer, which is far more manageable.
Ultimately, it’s about peace of mind: you’ve got a sophisticated recording, livestreaming, two-way talking security camera to protect your home.
