  • History of the name

When the very first event started in 2007 it wasn’t called Google I/O, “It was an event called Google Developer Day, which we hosted at the San Jose Convention Center with 1,000 tickets for developers,” said Lorin Platto, director of events and experiences operations and one of the original I/O event organizers.

After the event gained popularity it was moved to a bigger location in 2008 and officially earned its name.

Originally, the name I/O was actually based on something numerical: a googol, the eponymous number that lends the company its name.
