HEADING to university is an expensive time for students – and their parents.

With the average cost of living at £810 a month, according to the National Student Money Survey 2021 by savethestudent.org, maintenance loans fall short by £340 a month.

Getting your finances in order now can help. And these savvy tricks are not just for students . . .

GET YOUR CASH BACK: Use cashback for everything. And I mean everything. Visit Quido or TopCashback before you shop online.

I make back around 50p a time on every takeaway from Deliveroo or Uber Eats — and that adds up over a year.

Get a Revolut account and you can take advantage of immediate cashback at lots of high street restaurants, while the Airtime Rewards app only requires you to add your bank card and you can build up credit that will come off your phone bill.

ALWAYS GET A DISCOUNT: Make it a rule to never buy anything without a discount. Add a browser extension like Honey or Pouch to scan for discounts.

Check out The Sun app’s “Offers” section for great discounts on everything from food to clothing.

DON’T BE LOYAL: From switching bank accounts and taking advantage of instant cash rewards (Nationwide is offering £100 and HSBC £140), to swapping your internet provider, it pays to play the companies off against each other.

USE YOUR REWARDS: Check all your subscriptions and bills and make sure you are using every service provided.

If you have Amazon Prime, make sure you use the free audio book trial.

Make sure you have the apps for your mobile provider. O2 Priority has various different offers, while Vodafone’s VeryMe app does everything from cheap cinema tickets to random freebies.

COLLECT YOUR POINTS: Get a Tesco Clubcard to make instant savings at the till and get money-off coupons.

The Boots Advantage card is still the best for me (shop at the weekends for the big “extra points” offers).

And make sure you have the Costa Club app. Essentially, you get a free coffee for every four you buy.
