IN total there have been four cancelled TimeSplitters games despite the excellent legacy of the series.
This is more games than those that were actually released for the series, which hit its stride in the early 2000s.
While only three TimeSplitters games were ever released, they were all highly rated, and players have waited a long time for a new entry.
An untitled TimeSplitters game that we now know was called TimeSplitters Next, was cancelled in late 2023, making players lose hope once again.
It was cut when the Embracer Group laid off over a thousand members of staff as part of a cost cutting programme.
This included the entirety of Free Radical Design, the studio that was developing TimeSplitters Next.

While no footage from the game was ever officially released, a former employee of the studio has posted a six-minute video of gameplay on LinkedIn.
The footage is dated July 2023, meaning it is a snapshot of where development was around three months before the game was cancelled.
The developer wrote: “So, you want to know about the cancelled TimeSplitters game?
“I’ll be sure to post what I can… Embracer Group can go hide in a cave somewhere.”

The LinkedIn post has since been deleted, but we managed to watch the video before it was removed.
The video begins with some footage of the older TimeSplitters games before cutting to gameplay from TimeSplitters Next.
The game was still in development, so the video shows early footage, but it seems that it was not following the formula from the series of the same name.
Instead, it looks like a Fortnite clone, with bright colours, plenty of guns and shooting, and a UI that looks like it was taken directly from the battle royale.
One commenter said that it looks like “Fortnite at home” expressing that it is of lower quality than Fortnite.
Several features closely mimic Fortnite, including the in-game store and battle pass, as well as the look of the characters and map.
TimeSplitters Next would have also featured several game modes, some of which could house up to 100 players.
From the developer’s description, it seems as though the decision to copy Fortnite came from the Embracer Group rather than the studio.
