The pirate-themed video game Skull and Bones is launching today, and to promote the release, publisher Ubisoft posted a weird teaser on Thursday.

Under the title “Introducing: Skull and Bones Ship’s Wheel Controller”, the trailer shows close-ups of a massive hand-carved ship’s wheel, detailing its features as a game controller.

Two of the wheel’s handles are shown to house controls you will normally find on a regular console’s gamepad, such as face buttons and a D-pad.

The wheel is “advertised” as having a “full 360-degree range”, and is also said to feature “velocity paddles”, supposedly to control your ship’s speed in the game.

Mounted on top of the ship wheel’s axle is a large speaker with the Skull and Bones logo, described as adding a “Shanty Mode” to your pirate experience.

The catch is that the Skull and Bones Ship’s Wheel Controller is not an actual product that you can buy to play your games with.

The fine print displayed towards the end of the trailer clearly states that “this device is not for sale.”

It also confirms that the wheel “has been developed for Skull and Bones promotion only.”

The trailer ends with a promo screen about the game, showing Skull and Bones’ release date and advertising that pre-orders for the game were still available.

The tiny disclaimer hasn’t stopped fans of the game from discussing the video and speculating whether the wheel could become a real product.

Some even expressed genuine interest in buying a ship’s wheel controller and were disappointed by the lack of details about its price and availability.

Players of another pirate game, Sea of Thieves, also chimed in to say they’d buy the faux controller if it were real.

Several racing game fans also seemed interested in the peculiar gamepad, which they saw as an interesting alternative to their racing wheels.

The Skull and Bones video game has been available in early access for a couple of days now, and it’s having a full release today, February 16, 2024, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
