Adapt to change career

LOSING your job can be a chance to reset your career.

Will Capper of job site DirectlyApply gives his tips on finding work after furlough.

  • Highlight your furlough experience: Even though you may have been on furlough for almost 18 months, that doesn’t mean you haven’t been gaining experiences or overcoming new challenges during this time.
  • Upskill/retrain: There are thousands of free courses offered online, or register with a job centre to help you find the right training courses to kick-start your new career.
  • Consider temporary work: Firms may initially be cautious about hiring a large number of permanent staff. But taking a temporary role gets you a foot in the door and can lead to other opportunities.
  • Repurpose your skills: List the wide range of skills you have and how they could suit a variety of roles. Highlight career accomplishments and your varied experiences.
  • Be adaptable: The pandemic has brought a huge shift to the jobs market, so be prepared to broaden your horizons. Don’t be too proud to apply for a job where you might have to start again. Given your prior experience, you should find it quicker to rise up the ladder in a new role.

Rights to payout

IF you are made redundant, you might be entitled to a payout – even if the company is going bust.

James Andrews, a senior personal finance expert at money.co.uk, explains what rights you have.

Firstly, check your employment contract, as it will set out how much you are owed.

This is based on pre-furlough earnings.

Redundancy pay offers a set number of weeks’ pay in a lump sum.

It is based on your age and how long you have been at a firm.

You get any owed holiday pay as well as full pay for your notice period.

At the least, you’ll get statutory redundancy pay. It is capped at £544 a week with a maximum payout of £16,320.

If your firm is insolvent, apply for a redundancy claims form on the Government website.
