Liz Truss has resigned as leader of the Conservative Party – making her Britain’s shortest serving Prime Minister and opening up another leadership contest.

The FTSE 100 and pound edged up and gilts remained steady as Truss announced she would stand down, with the Tories due to choose a new leader within a week.
