SORE throat, runny nose, headaches and coughing – going down with common cold symptoms isn’t much fun.
But here’s how to make sure being under the weather doesn’t hit your bank balance . . .
FREE FLU VACCINE: A quick jab can stop you getting seriously ill and is offered free on the NHS to selected groups of people.
Anyone who is over 65, pregnant or a carer is among those who can get the vaccine without cost each year.
Contact your GP surgery to make an appointment.
If you don’t qualify for the free jab, you will have to pay.

Prices can vary considerably between surgeries, as well as pharmacies and supermarkets that offer the vaccine, so search for the best price.
For example, the jab costs £19.95 at Boots, whereas Superdrug loyalty card members can get it for £8.79.
BUY UNBRANDED: Big-name medicines often have the same active ingredients as own-brand products, which means both will do exactly the same job.
The main difference is that you will shell out far more for the named brand.

You should also be wary of packaging that claims relief from specific ailments — often this is just marketing and can come with a far higher price.
For example, a 16-tablet pack of cold and flu pain relief ibuprofen is £5.25 from Tesco.
But a Tesco own-brand 16-tablet pack of ibuprofen is just 40p.
HOME REMEDY: If you’re feeling grotty, drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins.
NHS advice is to gargle salt water to soothe a sore throat.
A cup of hot water with a spoonful of honey can also ease throat pain.
Add a slice of lemon for its antibacterial properties, and fresh ginger can also reduce inflammation.
If you are particularly congested, steam inhalation can help.
Have a hot shower or simply lean over a bowl of steaming water with a towel around your head.
