PLANNING a foreign summer holiday? You may be able to save on the cost of flying by taking a boat.
Shop around for the best ferry deals and you can save even more.
Here are some tips . . .
CHANGE DIRECTION: If you’re travelling to France, shop around for different routes. There’s a big variation in costs. Prices change, but to cross the Channel on the first Saturday in August and return a week later, Brittany Ferries is currently quoting £607 return from
Portsmouth to Caen as the cheapest fare for a family of four.
But dock a few hours up the coast to pay £248.50 for the cheapest return with DFDS, Newhaven to Dieppe.
On P&O routes from Dover to Calais you’d pay £210 for those August dates.

If changing routes means a longer drive, check fuel and any toll costs at tollguru.com/toll-calculator-france.
JOIN THE CLUB: Joining a frequent traveller club, like Brittany Ferries Club Voyage, could be worth it if you’re likely to use their ferries a few times a year. You’ll pay a £60 sign-up fee and £60 annual membership.
Benefits include money off food, and free or discounted cabins. Other operators may have similar loyalty schemes.
THE PRICE IS WIGHT: Ferry routes to the Isle of Wight aren’t cheap but look for savings on the Red Funnel and Wightlink websites. For example, book crossing and accommodation together at redfunnel.co.uk to save 25 per cent on the boat ticket.

With Wightlink you can save if you have AA Smart Benefits as part of your breakdown cover.
Both ferry firms are offering discounts for the island’s May walking festival. See isleofwightguru.co.uk for more ways to cut the crossing costs.
AHOY THERE: Prices are often cheaper on weekdays and night crossings can also bring down the price. Some oper-ators may offer discounts if you return within days.
