SERVING up a show-stopping party cake doesn’t have to put a dent in your bank balance.
With just £10, you can create “fake bakes” that will seriously impress guests, says Reshmi Bennett, founder of London bakery Anges de Sucre.
Here, Reshmi, who is also a children’s author, gives her tips for fabulous creations on a shoe-string budget . . .
BOX CLEVER: Start with the cheapest boxed cake you can find.
For example, Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference red velvet cake, £2.25, with a Nectar card.
If you have more guests to feed, create a two-tier cake by buying another and stacking it.

The top cake needs to be smaller than the bottom one.
If you buy one the same size, use a large round cookie cutter to cut a smaller circle out of the middle as your top tier.
A sharp knife works too.
Don’t throw away the offcuts — they can be used later for decorations.

Use a spatula or palette knife to slather both cakes with premade frosting (Ms Molly’s is 97p at Tesco).
DRIPPING DUPE: Professional cakes are often finished with a ganache dripping, but you can easily recreate this look.
Buy a cheap bar of cooking chocolate (Morrisons Savers brand is 40p), melt it and add a little warm water.
Then slowly pour on the top to drip down the sides.
WASTE NOT: Cake scraps can be used to create decorations.
Crumble them with your hands, then knead half into little balls and roll in the rest of the crumbs.
Try creating sprinkles around the base of the cakes out of cereal in your cupboard.
Fruit Loops or cornflakes both work.
Roughly chop them alongside cheap chocolate if you have any left.
GET CREATIVE: The most important thing is to have fun.
Experiment by adding favourite sweets, chocolates or biscuits to the top of the cake.
You can even add cheap fairy cakes for stunning extra height — and to help feed more guests.
