STITCH UP: You don’t need to take any lessons to stitch a pretty pattern with an embroidery kit.

It is an easy way into using a thread and needle — and is a relaxing hobby to boot.

Argos has a Professor Puzzle Be Happy kit, £7, with full instructions. Once you have followed a kit a few times you can create your own styles.

WIND A BOBBIN: If you’re going to get serious about sewing, you’ll need to invest in a machine.

Or Hobbycraft sells a mini sewing machine for £35.

There are lots of great online tutorials available for free that go through how to use a sewing machine.

FABRIC HUNTER: Cotton and linen are some of the best fabrics for beginners as they are less likely to slip in a machine.

Find cheap fabric at charity shops by picking up tablecloths, curtains, bed linen and larger clothes that can be used for other projects.

You can also try eBay for good-quality fabric at low prices.

Listings here may come direct from a supplier, helping to cut out the middle man and the additional costs associated with fabric stores.
