A RIVAL to Greggs is taking over the high street, but shoppers may want to take note of items they should buy and ones to avoid before they go.
Wenzel’s is a bakery chain which originated in London, but it now has over 100 stores across the South East and the Midlands.

But if you do opt to visit a Wenzel’s, how do you know if you’re getting the best value from your order?
Wenzel’s offers a range of baked goods and sweet treats, from sausage rolls and hot baguettes to belgian buns and millionaire shortbreads.
Many items are priced similarly to Greggs, with some items cheaper and some more expensive. Prices also vary from store to store.
You can find your nearest Wenzels bakery by putting your postcode or location into its store locator tool on its website.
Here are four things you should always buy at Wenzel’s:
Cake slices
Wenzels offers a huge selection of cake slices compared to other bakeries, and they sell for as little as a pound.
The flavours are also changed regularly so you won’t get bored.
Greggs doesn’t usually offer slices of cake except chocolate eclairs and muffins, which cost £1.60 according to Just Eat.

In February, for example, the bakery offered a limited edition chocolate orange cake slice in some stores for just £1.
Yummies
Wenzel’s sells a large ‘yummie’ – an iced and deep fried pastry – for £1.40 on Just Eat, but some stores sell the treat for as little as 99p.
The huge pastry is delicious and will keep you going for a while.
You can pick up a two-pack of boxed ‘Yum Yum’s’ for £1.60 at Greggs, but they are much smaller.
Fresh bread
Wenzel’s has a great selection of baguettes and loafs of bread, which gives it a very traditional bakery feel, which Greggs doesn’t offer.
You can pick up a freshly baked bloomer loaf starting from £2.10, according to Just Eat, with a large sourdough loaf costing £4.75.
Too Good To Go bags
The bakery sells of hot and cold food bags via food waste prevention app Too Good To Go at the end of the day.
You can also nab a veggie option, which Greggs doesn’t currently offer.
Hot bags sell for £4.75 while cold food bags cost £3.95, and each bag contains around £12 worth of items.
Greggs bags are slightly cheaper at £2.59 for a surprise bag, but the items are only worth around £8.
Shoppers say the bags feel better value at Wenzel’s.
What not to buy at Wenzel’s
Wenzel’s offers both meat and vegan sausage rolls as well as hot baked slices and cornish pasties, and they are all delicious.
However, these items are typically pricier than at Greggs and are quite similar in taste.
On JustEat, Greggs’ meat and vegan sausage rolls cost £1.45 while Wenzel’s charges £2.10 for its regular sausage roll and £3.40 for its meat-free sausage roll.
Soft drinks are also pricier at Wenzel’s than other stores, so they might be worth avoiding.
A 500ml coke, for example, costs £2.80 while at Greggs the exact same bottle is £2.15.
Meal deals aren’t the best value at Wenzel’s compared to similar offers elsewhere.
The deal includes a sandwich, crisps or a doughnut and a drink for £7.99 for a baguette or £7.45 for a regular sandwich, according to Just Eat.
While this is good value for the items at Wenzels, it’s almost twice the price of similar deals elsewhere.
