AIRPORTS are expensive places to pass through.

If you’re not prepared, your holiday budget can nosedive before you even reach the plane.

Instead of winging it, use these tips before take off.

DO THE MEAL MATHS: Feeding a family at the airport can soon eat into your budget, especially as airport restaurants can hike prices by more than ten per cent.

You can take solid foods like sandwiches, crisps and fruit through security, so pack an airport picnic instead, but use a clear container.

If you really want to eat out, make the most of any available deals.

Selected restaurants at Heathrow — including Leon at terminal two and Giraffe at terminal five — are offering a kids-eat-free deal when an adult buys a main course during the summer holidays.

APP, APP AND AWAY: Instead of forking out for pricy reading material, get access to books and magazines online.

If you belong to your local library, you may be able to log on to apps like Borrowbox and Libby to access your favourite authors and titles.

Otherwise, the Readly app, which gives access to 7,000 magazines, is £9.99 a month, but you can try it out for your holiday with one month’s access free.

PRICELESS PARKING: Getting a lift to the airport? Avoid pricey drop-off charges — usually at least £5 — by pulling up in free areas instead.

Leave extra time though as you may need to walk to the terminal or grab a shuttle bus.

THINK BEFORE YOU DRINK: Even a bottle of water can set you back extra at the airport.

Many travellers end up forking out once they get airside. But there are usually plenty of water fountains you can fill up at once you have cleared security. Just take an empty bottle.

Take a reusable coffee cup too, then you can save 50p on hot drinks if there’s an airport Pret A Manger.
