Here are a few easy, affordable ideas to try . . .

BASIC INSTINCTS: Whisk up some tasty pancakes with store cupboard basics — eggs, flour and milk.

You can make traditional flat pancakes, served with fresh berries and honey or golden syrup.

Or take it to the next level by fluffing them up with some baking powder to make American-style treats.

Add whisked banana or blueberries to the mixture to make it extra special, or serve with crispy bacon and a drizzle of maple syrup.

POWER PORRIDGE: Oats are cheap and deliver a bowl of perfect porridge.

Make it even better by adding a spoonful of crunchy peanut butter and mashed banana to the saucepan as the porridge bubbles away.

Serve with warm berries. Frozen blueberries are cheaper than fresh.

Or slice banana on top with a sprinkling of raisins and a dusting of nutmeg or cinnamon.

GOOD EGGS: Eggy bread is an easy, indulgent breakfast.

Just whisk two eggs with a dash of milk, dip in some bread until it’s covered in the eggy mix, then fry on both sides in a pan with butter.

Top with bacon.

You could also make scrambled egg with smoked salmon.

Scottish smoked salmon trimmings are £2.25 for 100g at Sainsbury’s, compared with £3.50 for a regular 100g pack.

PERFECT PASTRIES: If mum loves a pastry, swerve the pre-packed ones and buy frozen.

They taste better and any you don’t use can be kept for later. Also check the pack price on any pastries.

If you buy them individually, you could pay over £1.

Buy a pack of six frozen ones and they’ll cost less than 50p each.

Little hands will love cutting and rolling Jus-Rol Croissants or Cinnamon Swirls from the fridge section — a six-pack is down from £2.40 to £1.50 at Morrisons.
