OFFALLY GOOD: For a high value treat for puppies learning their stuff, blend together 60g wholewheat flour and 220g chicken liver.

Spread the mixture into a baking tray and bake at 180C or gas mark four for 15 to 20 minutes.

Allow it to cool after baking and cut into small squares while still a bit warm.

Keep the doggy snacks in the freezer for up to six months.

CANINE COOKIES: Make this five-ingredient recipe in quick time. Preheat the oven to 175C or gas mark four.

Mix 130g brown rice flour (or brown rice ground in a blender), half an apple, 185g plain yogurt, a teaspoon of ground ginger and a tablespoon of olive oil.

Roll the dough on a floured surface to around a quarter of an inch thick. Cut into shapes, like hearts or bones.

NOSE YOUR STUFF: Dogs love exploring and a few easy games that engage their senses will keep them happy.

One of the simplest from vet charity PDSA is to scatter some treats on an old towel or blanket.

Roll it up, making sure the treats don’t fall out the ends, then let your pup sniff and snuffle the snacks out of the towel.

All you need to do is sit back and watch their tail wag!

HOLE LOT OF FUN: Another activity for curious canines is to put treats in the holes of a muffin tin.

Place tennis balls over them and then get your pooch to sniff them out and move the balls to get to them.

To give pets an extra challenge for their nose and memory skills, put the balls back after they have found the treat.

For little pooches, use an egg carton to hold the snacks.
