Why is Fortnite down?

Fortnite updates require several hours of downtime to release into the game, and right now servers are down to launch v28.20.

Apart from general fixes, the new update will also kick off the TMNT event, which is due to start properly on Friday, February 9, 2024.

Players were expecting update 28.20 to come yesterday, but developers Epic Games had different plans this time.

As usual, Epic Games has warned everyone about the downtime in advance.

Calling the update “lean, mean, and green”, Fortnite’s official Twitter/X accounts once again teased the addition of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the game.

Matchmaking in Fortnite was disabled 30 minutes before update deployment started this morning.

Proper downtime for patch 28.20 began at 9am UK time / 4am ET.

Here’s Epic Games’ post on the Fortnite Status Twitter/X account warning about the upcoming downtime:

How long will Fortnite be down?

Epic Games has not given end times for the current server maintenance period, but we can expect Fortnite to be down for 3-4 hours based on previous updates.

If patch deployment goes well, without any major issues, Fortnite servers will be back online before 12pm UK time / 7am ET.

Should anything go wrong, downtime can take longer, but the developers usually warn about delays during the update process.

Players can always check for updates on the game’s server status at the official Fortnite Status Twitter/X account.

Outage report aggregator DownDetector is another good place to get up-to-date information on Fortnite’s server availability.
