The former head of Barclays bank has hit back at allegations about his connection to the paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, dubbing them ‘slanderous and baseless’.

Jes Staley faces a lawsuit from his former employer JP Morgan, which wants to hold him liable for penalties it incurs amid claims it enabled Epstein’s crimes.

Staley, the former head of JP Morgan’s private bank, has asked the court for his October trial to be delayed until March 2024.

The timeline gave him ‘grossly insufficient’ time to defend himself against what he argues are false claims.

JP Morgan faces two civil suits alleging it enabled Epstein’s sex trafficking and believes Staley, 66, should have to pay compensation if it loses the cases.

In a letter to a Manhattan court last week, Staley asked for the lawsuit against him to be severed from the other civil lawsuits.

But JP Morgan said he was ‘inextricably linked to these cases’ and it made ‘no sense to separate him’.
