Here are five easy ways to make the most of stale slices.

YOU BIG SOFTIE: Freshen up old bread with a simple trick.

Sprinkle the slice with water then pop it in the oven or airfryer to warm it up.

The bread will then be lovely and soft when done, but eat it immediately as it quickly starts to turn hard.

IN THE SOUP: Perfect for soup or salads, croutons are a great way to use up stale slices.

Tear or cut into bite-sized pieces, coat them in olive oil with a pinch of salt, then bake in the oven for just under ten minutes until crisp.

You can also try various herbs and spices for different flavour combinations.

PROPOSE A TOAST: Make a first-class toasted cheese sarnie with old bread by buttering the outside of the bread before putting it into a toastie maker.

You can also make a toasted sandwich by frying it.

Again, butter the bread on the outside then fry it in a pre-heated pan for a couple of minutes on each side until the cheese is melted.

PUD IN THE EFFORT: Turn stale slices into a feel-good treat with bread and butter pudding. Cut the bread into triangles and trim off the crusts.

Butter both sides and layer in a buttered ovenproof dish, adding a sprinkling of sultanas or currants as you go.

Then pour custard in the dish to cover the bread and leave it to soak or toss the bread to make sure it is all covered in the mixture.

Add a little sugar on top before baking it for around half an hour until golden.

CRACKING IDEA: Use old bread for this classic breakfast treat. Start by beating together a couple of eggs with a dash of milk, then coat the slices in the mixture.

Fry the bread in oil or butter for a couple of minutes on each side before serving.
