As the mornings get darker, it’s much harder to wake up for work

But there are some easy ways to help you “get up and go” . . .

Phil Lawlor, a sleep expert at Dormeo Mattresses (dormeo.co.uk), says: “There is a link between the stress hormone cortisol in the brain and your living environment. When your room is untidy and cluttered, you have more cortisol and that means a bad night’s sleep.

“You will be able to wake up more easily if you spend five minutes clearing surface space each week and have a quick tidy-up before bed.”

Mark Ellis, tech expert says: “A lot of people don’t know that most smart watches have sleep trackers already included and they can really help you get into a sleep routine. The Apple Watch does it automatically, so when the alarm sounds, my watch will buzz on my wrist and that gradual wake-up makes it so much easier to get up.”

Farzana Ali, sound therapist says: “Nature-based sounds such as bird song help us relax and improve our mood. So rather than shocking your system with a shrill alarm, setting your alarm tone to a more peaceful sound should be the perfect antidote to winter morning grogginess.”

Jane Hodgson, of vitamins and supplements firm innopure.com, says: “The lack of natural sunlight can impact your circadian rhythm, making it harder to get a peaceful night’s bliss. In winter, take a vitamin D3 supplement to boost the immune system. It will make you feel more energised in the morning.”

MY TIP: Mimic the nature and wake up with a sunrise lamp. The Smartsleep Wake-Up light is £122.99 at philips.co.uk but Lidl is now selling the Auriol Light alarm clock with DAB+ radio for £29.99, instore only.
