THE darker days of winter can create plenty of hiding places for dust and dirt.
But you can keep on top of the cleaning with these simple tips that will save you time and money and give you a sparkling home . . .
DIY DUSTBUSTERS: There are fancy dusting kits to be had, from blind cleaners to furniture wipes, but you can also just repurpose bits of old clothing.
Microfibre cloths are great for cleaning but an old cotton T-shirt can do the job too. It’s soft, won’t scratch surfaces and can be easily washed.
If you have a woollen jumper that has maybe seen better days, it can also taken on a new life.
SOCKS SENSE: Slatted blinds can be a pain to clean. Instead of splashing out on a special duster, pop an old thick sock on your hand and wipe it over every slat, working from the top down.

To clear out grime from hard-to-reach crevices, like behind radiators, wrap a cloth around a spatula and secure it with a rubber band.
LESS IS MORE: Instead of spraying polish on to your furniture — and most of it ending up in the air — spritz a little on to your cleaning cloth instead.
And have another cloth to hand to buff away any smears.
Many people don’t use polish at all, finding a damp cloth does the job just as well. If you have a spray bottle, mist the cloth for streak-free dusting.

WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS: Make your own polish with this recipe.
Mix two parts vinegar, two parts olive oil and one part lemon juice.
Dip in the corner of a cloth and rub a bit into your wooden furniture.
Go over again with a second cloth to clear smears.
SUCK IT UP: For rapid dust- busting, a vacuum cleaner is great.
Most come with an attachment for tight spots, upholstery tool for soft furniture, dusting brush and extension wand — and they gather dust rather than waft it around.
