SPICE OF LIFE: Have a ready-made Mexican spice mix to hand to use in meals.

To make this, mix three tablespoons each of garlic powder, ground cumin, onion powder and paprika, with two tablespoons of chilli powder and two teaspoons of dried oregano, plus a teaspoon each of salt and pepper.

AVO GO: Give your Mexican feast the perfect finishing touch with homemade guacamole, for eight people.

Chop a large ripe tomato into small pieces. Add the flesh of three avocados, the juice of a lime, two tablespoons of chopped coriander, a finely chopped red onion, salt, pepper and some chilli — and roughly mash together.

IT’S A WRAP: You can buy Mexican fajita, enchilada and taco kits in supermarkets, which typically include wraps, spices and salsa.

Selected Old El Paso kits, including fajitas and nachos, are now down from £4 to £3 at Waitrose.

Or make your own salsa with tomatoes, a red onion, garlic and lime. Add a packet of wraps, from £1.

RAISE YOUR GLASS: Toast the fiesta with a cold classic. A pack of 18 x 330ml bottles of Corona Extra is £14.50 at Asda, down from £16.50.

If cocktails are more your thing, a margarita with tequila, lime and triple sec will hit the spot.

Or try a pre-mixed can. You can get four for the price of three — including Funkin Nitro lime margarita, 200ml, £2.20 — with a Tesco Clubcard.

MEXI-MUNCHIES: Check out local Mexican restaurants for Cinco de Mayo deals.

You can also download the app for Mexican restaurant chain Las Iguanas and play the digital scratch card to see if you’ve won a free Margarita, Pacifico or Modelo beer.
