CREATING a beautiful space outside to relax and play needn’t cost the Earth.
There are plenty of items that can be saved from the bin and repurposed in your garden or on your balcony instead.
Here’s how to give a new lease of life to unwanted items . . .
CDs: If you have a vegetable patch or allotment, use string to hang old CDs above it — this will deter birds from pecking at your plants and it will look decorative, too.
PLANTERS: Almost any kind of container can be used to plant flowers or shrubs.
Pots, pans or colanders that can no longer be used in the kitchen are ideal, while old wellies and wheelbarrows have a quaint charm.

Even bath tubs and old toilets can be used to create a quirky outdoor feature.
If you don’t have anything suitable, search Facebook listings or local Freecycle sites.
PROTECT SEEDLINGS: If you have new shoots coming up, use old plastic bottles to protect them from cold winds, slugs and snails.
Cut the bottom off and drive into the soil. Ice cream sticks can be used to to label seeds.

FENCING: You can use old bits of wood to create a fence and mark boundaries.
One of the cheapest ways to do this is using free or cheap pallets.
Putting fence posts, from £14 at Wickes, between the pallets will give it a more professional look.
There are numerous YouTube tutorials on using reclaimed wood to build a fence, or try the WikiHow guide at wikihow.com/secure-a-pallet-fence.
LANTERN JARS: Create a magical atmosphere outside by popping tealights in old jars and dotting them around your garden.
You can use wire or string to hang jars from a small tree, which can look pretty special.
First, tie the wire or string around the neck of the jar.
Then loop another piece under and tie it on one side.
Tie the other end on the other side to make the handle.
