CHURN BABY CHURN: Ice- cream makers do the churning for you to create velvety ice- cream in minutes, and you don’t need to spend hundreds of pounds to get one.
You can pick up the Progress EK4390P ice-cream maker for £29.99, reduced from £49.99, at Robert Dyas. George at Asda has its own one for £18.
TOP ADV-ICE: No matter what recipe you use, it is essential that all ingredients are cold before use as they will freeze faster and give a smoother texture, says Paul Huddleston, head chef of the Waterside Bar and Bistro in Shipley, West Yorks.
Paul, who has worked with Marco Pierre White and Alain Ducasse, also recommends using full-fat ingredients, which are tastier and easier to churn. Bold flavours are best because they will weaken when frozen. Eat within a week to ensure the taste is at its best.
GO BANANAS: For a super easy, no-churn ice-cream, throw chunks of ripe banana in the freezer. When frozen, blitz in a blender. You can add a little yoghurt or whole milk if you’d like a creamier finish.
Experiment with different flavours, such as peanut butter, chocolate or vanilla extract. Put your mix back in the freezer for an hour before serving.
TOPPING MAD: For an indulgent topping, cover your favourite chocolate bar with a tea towel and smash with a rolling pin and then sprinkle the shards over your ice-cream.
Or for a simple take on Eton Mess, crumble meringue on vanilla ice-cream and top with strawberry sauce and squirty cream. Or crush ginger nut biscuits over Haagen-Dazs salted caramel, which is down from £4.50 to £3 in Sainsbury’s.
