FISH suppers are a British staple – but yours might have travelled almost 9,000 miles. That’s a third of the way round the Earth.
We looked at some supermarkets’ frozen fare combinations and found fish that had clocked up more than 8,000 miles.
Caught in the North Atlantic, they are shipped to China for processing before landing on our plates.
Incredibly, your chips might have been from spuds grown in the UK, then shipped to Europe to be chipped before returning to our shores.
Our milometer reveals how far some fish dinners have been.
An Asda spokesman said other options were available that had not travelled as far, and the other supermarkets did not comment.
Iceland
Iceland’s 100 per cent fish fillet strips in a breaded coating, 450g – £3: Farmed, produced and packed in Vietnam so they have travelled 6,217 miles to get to UK.
Iceland’s luxury Maris Piper chunky oven chips, 1.5kg – £2: Uses potatoes from the UK, which are produced and packed in Belgium then returned to UK shops in a 500-mile round trip.
Asda
Asda’s Simply Cook From Frozen 4 haddock fillets, 400g – £3.30: Caught in the North East Atlantic Ocean (Barents Sea and Norwegian Sea, Spitzbergen and Bear Island) and packed in China before coming to the UK – a whopping 8,572 miles.
Asda’s straight cut chips, less than 3 per cent fat, 1.5kg – £2: Packed in Belgium, meaning they have travelled 250 miles.
M&S
M&S wild Icelandic cod, 380g – £4.50: Caught and packed in Iceland before being shipped to the UK clocking up 1,128 miles
M&S curly fries, 700g – £1.75: Made in the Netherlands, so these travel 321 miles to get to our plates.
Morrisons
Morrisons’ 4 cod fillets, 360g – £3.30: Caught in the North East Atlantic (Barents Sea, Norwegian Sea, Spitzbergen and Bear Island), clocking up 1,204 miles to UK’s dinner plates.
Morrisons’ skin on vegan fries, 600g – 85p: Produced in the UK, so these fries travel zero miles to our shores.
Sainsbury’s
Sainsbury’s responsibly sourced skinless & boneless 6 cod steaks, 520g – £4.25: Caught in North East Atlantic Ocean (Barents Sea, Norwegian Sea, Spitzbergen and Bear Island) before being produced in China, chalking up 8,572 miles.
Sainsbury’s crinkle cut chips, 900g – £1.25: Produced in the Netherlands, 321 miles.
Tesco
Tesco’s 4 chunky battered cod fillets, 500g – £3.60: Caught in the North East Atlantic (Barents Sea, Norwegian Sea or Iceland) travelling 1,129 miles to British dinner plates.
McCain Home Chips, 1kg – £2.29: Spuds are grown in the UK and the chips are made at one of the company’s factories here – so zero miles involved.
