ANDROID owners have received a new Google Photos feature that can help keep their photos organised and their phones tidy.

The feature is called Photo Stacks, and essentially creates mini-albums based on when the pictures were taken.

It helps group similar photos taken in a short period of time, such as on the same day.

Photo Stacks organises pictures in a similar way to how Apple sorts photos in the For You section of its native Photo Album app.

Users can stack up to 100 photos together, Google told Android Authority.

It’s important to note that for Photo Stacks to be able to organise pictures, the images need to be backed up first.

The feature will not work on locally stored images.

Google explains how to back up photos in a help page on its website.

It has already been available to iPhone owners and some Android users, such as Pixel phones, since the feature’s launch in November.

But Google is now rolling out Photo Stacks on Google Photos for Android phones for widely, including Samsung handsets.

When users get the feature on your Google Photos app, they should see a popup window alerting them of its availability.

“Fiiiinally just got the stacked photos in Google Photos activated today,” one user tweeted, adding “This rollout took forever.”

How to enable Photo Stacks in Google Photos

To set up the Photo Stacks feature in Google Photos, simply follow these steps:

In most cases, the feature is automatically activated.

But switching it on manually only takes a few seconds.

  • First open the Google Photos app.
  • Then head to Photos settings.
  • Scroll to find the Preferences option.
  • Here you will find a Stack similar photos option that you must enable.
