Fiat has launched a new scheme for owners of its first-ever electric car, rewarding their efficient driving with crypto.

Drivers of its latest 500 city car – which is now all-electric – will be issued KiriCoins if they’re found to be using their vehicles in the most eco-friendly way.

These cryptoassets can then we exchanged for vouchers for a variety of popular services, including Amazon, Netflix, Apple, Spotify and Airbnb.

Those found to be driving economically can collect coins worth around £125 in a year, claims the Italian vehicle manufacturer.

How efficiently a user is driving is determined by the 500’s ‘eco:Score’ function, which ranks how green they are at the wheel with a rating from 0 to 100. Higher levels of efficiency means a greater number of KiriCoins and rewards.

The tech collects driving data, such as speed and distance travelled, and uploads this to the ‘Kiri cloud’.

Users can then download tokens they’ve earned to their smartphones for use in purchasing products and services from the cryptocurrency’s marketplace.

Fiat claims the rewards are twofold, with users with the best eco:Scores able to conserve enough battery range over a year to cut their charging costs by 20 per cent.

Based on the average cost of charging a New 500, such efficiencies in driving style would enable owners to save nearly £50 on home charging costs, rising to approximately £70 if drivers are instead using more expensive public devices.

The ‘first-of-its-kind collaboration’ is based on the average yearly mileage of 6,200 miles.

Commenting on the new scheme, Greg Taylor, Fiat’s country manager, said: ‘We feel this innovative service offering further cements the New 500’s place at the forefront of sustainable mobility, incentivising our drivers to adopt an efficient and responsible driving style which is not only respectful to the environment but also enables them to fully enhance the efficiencies of the New 500 with regards to battery life and charging costs.’
