A FAST-cooking potato that saves on roasting time at Christmas has gone on sale.
The Nemo — named after the clownfish from Pixar film Finding Nemo due to its stripy markings — is said to taste better than the King Edward and Maris Piper.
But the spud also cooks 25 per cent faster.
Developer, Dr David Nelson, nicknamed Dr Potato, said: “We were looking at a variety that would not only taste superb but would also save on roasting time.”
Nemo, a cross between fast-cooking Peruvian variety Inca Bella and red-skinned salad spud Franceline, has taken six years to perfect.
It has been developed by Lincolnshire grower Branston, where Dr Nelson is the agronomy director.
A limited stock of the variety, which takes less water and fertiliser to grow, has gone on sale in Tesco as its Finest British Roasting Potatoes.
Tesco potato buyer Hannah Moseley said: “They taste wonderfully rich and buttery but are also light and fluffy on the inside with a beautiful golden crispness on the outside — basically, perfect roasties.”
