The retailer will shut its Station Street unit in the city centre on September 30 and move to the Pompey Centre.

An opening date for the new store is yet to be confirmed but a Matalan spokesperson said it would be “mid Autumn”.

The move comes amid a downsizing of the B&Q store at the shopping centre.

This will allow space for three other businesses.

And a map on the Matalan website suggests the fashion and homewares store will take the third spot inside the revamped unit.

A Matalan spokesperson said: “I can confirm that our current Portsmouth store on Station Rd will be closing on 30th September…

“And will be relocating to a great new unit at the Pompey Centre retail park.
