FAMILY energy bills will double to £2,000 next year, suppliers warn.
The gas and electricity crisis will deal a £25billion hit to consumers, they say.
The alert came as Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng held emergency talks with suppliers.
Treasury and No 10 officials were also in on the Zoom meeting.
Stephen Fitzpatrick, founder of the Ovo energy company, said Britain is hurtling towards a massive cost-of-living disaster.
He said: “It looks almost certain that bills are going to reach £2,000 per household — that is double what they were paying last year.”
Extreme cold weather in parts of the world, nuclear outages in France and lower gas flows from Russia are raising prices.
Brits are partly protected by the energy price cap, which limits how much a company can charge. But this cap is set to soar in April and again in October — when it is reassessed.
Soaring bills will force many to choose between heating their homes and eating, suppliers and politicians have warned.
Energy suppliers want the Government to come up with a scheme to allow consumers to spread the cost of the price hike over several years — perhaps through state-backed loans.
But there is no sign the Government will cough up.
A spokeswoman said: “There was discussion of the issues facing the sector and an agreement for meetings to continue to ensure UK consumers are protected.”
