A MAJOR pizza chain is launching a breakfast menu within weeks – including dough balls with jam and bacon and egg pizza.

Pizza Express is opening its first airport restaurant at London Gatwick’s South Terminal on May 20.

And the new location, opening between 3.30am and 11pm daily, will be the first in the UK to serve breakfast to diners too.

Customers visiting the branch will be able to choose from 25 breakfast items in total, including eggs on bruschetta and shakshuka baked eggs.

Foodies will also be able to snap up more common breakfast menu items, including croissants and pain au raisins.

Holidaymakers can choose from a range of full English breakfast variations too, including a Full Veggie, Light Works and Full Works.

There will even be a kids’ menu for the little ones, including eggs and soldiers with dough sticks.

Pizza Express is not the only chain or retailer to be eyeing up opening more locations in travel hubs.

In January, WHSmith said it wanted to open 15 more stores in 2024, focusing on sites in airports, railway stations and hospitals.

The stationer said it wanted to open the same amount “each year over the medium term” in an update to investors.

It came as it revealed its UK travel sales grew by 15% in the 20 weeks leading up to January 20, compared to the same period in 2023.

Meanwhile, bakery giant Greggs opened two 24-hour airport branches in 2023 as it increases its presence across the UK.

In September last year, Pret a Manger said it wanted to open a branch inside Glasgow Airport.

History of Pizza Express

Pizza Express opened its first UK restaurant in Wardour Street, London in 1965.

A second followed shortly after, opening on Coptic Street next to the British Museum, in 1967.

The chain now runs 370 pizzerias across the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Pizza Express runs 360 pizzerias in the UK, and also sells a range of items across supermarkets.

The chain also operates in Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates, as well as franchise stores in Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

In February 2022, the chain launched its first loyalty scheme, with two million customers now using it.
