Facebook Inc. ’s chief technology officer, a long-serving top lieutenant to co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, said on Wednesday he will step down from the role next year.

Mr. Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO, said Mike Schroepfer, after 13 years with the company, would become its first senior fellow, a part-time role that will focus on recruiting and developing technical talent, improving project infrastructure and overseeing artificial intelligence developments.
