WORKING parents will shell out more than £1,250 per child this summer, a study has found.

More than £500 of that will be spent on days out and activities such as sports clubs.

Another £204 will go on extra childcare during the six-week school break, £297 on food treats like meals out, and £263 on shopping trips.

But one in three parents said they will be cutting down on day trips and activities this summer because of a lack of funds.

Greg Marsh, chief exec of Nous.co, which did the study, warned: “The next few weeks will be tough for working parents dealing with high food prices, energy bills and mortgage payments.

In previous years, they may have had spare cash to spend on their kids — now every penny is spoken for.”

Mum-of-one Sheen Horton, 40, from Stamford, Lincs, was not surprised by the £1,250 bill and said: “I’m not surprised by that figure of £1,250 per child.

“We spend easily that much extra on our six-year-old daughter Leila in the summer.

“We don’t want Leila to have to miss out.

“We want her to enjoy the holidays, so next week when I’m working her dad is is treating her and her cousin to a trip to London Zoo and a water activities park.

“With the train prices there and back, that will easily be £300, if not more.

“We try and split our holiday allowance and lean more on family and friends with kids to avoid paying too much for childcare in the summer.”

Marketing worker Sheen and husband Paddy, 48, a publishing director, will soon see their mortgage on their four-bedroom home rise by £900 a month.

She said: “I don’t know how some people manage.”
