EXPERTS are flush with success after working out how to wind loo roll tighter to get more sheets on the tube.
Tesco technicians have doubled the number from 220 to 440 while increasing the paper width from 109mm to 130mm.
A 12-pack, which went on sale this week, is far smaller than the old 24-pack despite having the same number of sheets and is 10p cheaper at £7.50.
Cupboards will store twice as much, and rolls last longer on the holder, so getting caught short should be less of a worry.
Tesco says its green-minded move will cut its use of plastic packaging by 67 tons a year and mean 17 fewer lorry trips a week to transport rolls from the supplier to Tesco distribution centres.
Other supermarkets are expected to copy Tesco, further reducing plastic and fuel use.
Katie Frost, Tesco’s paper buying manager, said: “As well as removing unnecessary plastic, reducing the size of multi-packs will free up valuable space in our lorries that can be put to great use this Christmas.
“We are looking at a number of ways to use less packaging.
“In the last few years, we’ve cut 6,000 tons of it from products, including a billion pieces of plastic.”
