NEXT week is the bank holiday and that means an extra day off.

But it could also mean your state pension is paid earlier as well.

And there’s one number that will dictate what day you’ll get the payment – your National Insurance (NI) number.

That’s because the last two digits of your NI number usually show what day your state pension is paid on.

If the two digits are between 00 and 19, your state pension will be paid on a Monday.

It’s Tuesday if they are between 20 and 39, and Wednesday between 40 and 59.

If your payment usually comes on a Monday then there may be some changes this week

60 to 79 are paid on a Thursday and numbers 80 to 99 are usually paid on Fridays.

As August 29 is a bank holiday this year, those who are usually paid on this day of the week won’t receive their money then.

Instead, the government will bring the payment date forward by one working day.

This is because payments cannot be processed on August 29 as banks are closed.

Therefore, pensioners can expect to be paid next Friday, August 26, instead.

But what does this mean in terms of your National Insurance number?

If your number ends in digits between 00 to 19 and you usually get paid on Mondays then you are likely to have your payment date shifted forwards to next Friday.

But regardless of the changes, you won’t have to do anything different to receive the payment – the Department for Work and Pensions will action it automatically.

Payments should be placed straight into your bank, building society or credit union account and you won’t have to worry about changing any details to make sure you get what you’re owed.

And if your payment date falls on a normal day that’s not a bank holiday, then you’ll get your payment as normal.

What other bank holidays could affect my state pension payments?

There are a number of bank holidays throughout the year, with the Christmas bank holiday the next one we’ll see after August.

Here is the full list of upcoming holidays for the rest of the year:

  • August 29
  • December 26
  • December 27
  • January 2, 2023

In most of these cases, the DWP says if your payment is due on a bank holiday you’ll be paid on the working day before.

It’s not just state pension dates that change depending on the bank holidays.

Universal Credit and other benefit payment dates can change too.
