WE are a nation of bookworms, with sales soaring over the past year.
But with novels costing around £8 on average, reading can be an expensive habit, especially if you are a quick reader. So here are my tips on keeping costs down.

MEMBERS’ CLUB: The obvious place for free books is your local library, but did you know you can borrow without even leaving the house? Most library membership cards give access to one of the e-book services such as Borrow Box, RB Digital and Libby. Our local library in Kent subscribes to Libby, which I use to download Roald Dahl audiobooks free for my son, who is a big Dahl fan.

EVERYONE’S A CRITIC: Enjoy Kindle books for free in return for writing reviews on them. Sign up at NetGalley and you can request popular new books, then leave your feedback. Sally Nicholls’ The Silent Stars Go By, £12.99, was this week available to 100 members.

CAN’T PUT IT DOWN: Turn your phone into an e-reader using the Kindle app and take out a free two-month Kindle Unlimited trial. If you are a fast reader you could whizz through all seven Harry Potters at no cost! But cancel in time if you don’t want to pay the £7.99 monthly subscription.

PRIME TIME: Amazon Prime members can use its First Reads section to download a free Kindle book each month (two this October) from a selection of up to ten ahead of official release. Current titles include Her Perfect Family by Teresa Driscoll and All We Left Unsaid by Natalie Martin. Non-Prime readers can get them for 99p.
