GIVE it some welly! It’s the LEAF Open Farm Sunday this weekend when they offer free entry to families.
So grab the kids and meet the animals, see cows being milked and maybe have a go at welly-wanging. Here is a selection of participating venues.
DAYNES FARM, TOTNES, DEVON: Farmer David Camp will be talking about how he looks after his cows, sheep and lambs, goats and kids and chicks as well as his crops.
Walk with the farmer at noon and 2pm and watch sheep shearing demonstrations, have a go on a tractor and trailer, plus take part in craft demonstrations. Visit their new farm shop and butchery, too.
NEW HOLBECK FARM, NOTTS: On this organic calf-with-cow dairy farm, take part in a guided farm walk and check out the modern or vintage machinery. There will also be live music.
BRATTLEBY FARM, LINCS: Visit this eco farm that grows biofuels such as willow and miscanthus crops. The willow is also used for papermaking, basket-making and willow domes.
Families can learn all about the process for spinning, weaving, knitting and feltmaking. There will be tractor rides and craft stalls.
GELLI AUR FARM CAMPUS, CARMARTHENSHIRE: Watch the dairy herd being milked and find out about the research projects being undertaken at this huge agricultural campus.
There will be plenty of machinery on display and activities to take part in.
KQ FARM, LEEDS: Hear about different tree species and the forest garden, with an option to tour the flower and veggie gardens.
Wear wellies and a good raincoat and you might be able to pick your flowers for an extra fee, depending on what’s actually flowered by this weekend.
