THE X Factor would normally be keeping us entertained in the run-up to Christmas – but not this year.
The ITV show’s cancellation, owing to Covid, need not leave you singing the blues, though, because you can still stage pop-tastic nights at home.
These savings hit the high notes for me . . .
CHEAP AS HITS: Karaoke machines can cost nearly £200 but there is no need to spend that much to make like an X Factor contestant. Head to Argos, where the RockJam SingCube is currently just £30, down from the usual £40. It connects to your mobile and has a light show that moves in time with your music. Very cool, if you ask me.
SAVE: About £170 on karaoke machine
MIC A SAVING: Pump up the volume with a karaoke microphone. The Mi
Mic Karaoke Speaker Mic, £28 at Argos, also serves as a speaker and can connect to any compatible Bluetooth device. If you buy via Quidco, as a new member you can get a £5 cashback bonus.
SAVE: £5
LIGHTBULB MOMENT: Sometimes, all you need for a singalong is decorations, YouTube and a hairbrush. But I love the £10 Satzuma Disco Bulb, which can temporarily replace your regular one on the lounge ceiling to create a nightclub vibe. It works out much cheaper than a professional set-up, or even standing disco lights such as the Tinc Plug In Party Boogie Light, £17.50 at John Lewis.
SAVE: £7.50
SONG AND DANCE: Channel The X Factor’s groups by practising your routine on a dance mat. You can buy state-of-the-art ones for around £60 but there are great retro Noughties versions on Amazon, for as little as £18.44.
SAVE: Approx £49 on a dance mat

A MUG of hot chocolate is bliss on a cold night. But instead of paying £2.48 for a 500g jar of Asda’s own brand, pick up a same-size jar of Cadbury’s in the store. It’s on offer for £2.
SAVE: 48p
