Cummins said it appointed Jennifer Rumsey as chief executive to steer the world’s largest maker of diesel engines toward new, lower-emissions technologies.

Ms. Rumsey will become the seventh CEO of 103-year-old Cummins and the first woman to lead the company started by Clessie Cummins, a self-taught innovator of diesel engines. She has been the company’s chief operating officer and president since last year.
